SECOND OPINION

The Passat GLX strikes me as a car of considerable conflicts. On the positive side of the ledger, there’s VW’s sweet little VR6, which, despite being saddled with a less-than-ideal automatic transmission, still merits great fun-to-drive points. And while one is required to put up with a bit more noise-vibration-harshness than in a number of other conventional sport sedans, the GLX’s well-controlled suspension, grippy tires, and potent anti-lock brakes also help its cause. But a rather dated-looking interior and lack of an airbag put it one step behind a few of its contemporary competitors. And a $21,130 pricetag means the GLX goes virtually head to head against the likes of similarly equipped Camry SE V-6 or Mazda 626 ES sedans. Unfortunately, that’s not a particularly enviable position.…
