A VERY BAD BIRD

It’s been our humble opinion that the general state of the automobile is good and getting better. Of course, this conviction is subject to the occasional reality check. Exactly that sort of opportunity was provided by the Pontiac Firebird Firehawk (previewed last month in Trends) during this true-life encounter: Youngish, female cashier at a gas station/conve-nience store: “Wow! What’s that?” Keen response from your trusty scribe: “It’s a ’93 Firebird with all the trimmings.” Cashier: “Geez, I thought it was a Lotus! That’s a bad car!” Ed Hamburger, the man behind this variation of the Firebird theme, is in the bad-car business. When he isn’t crafting custom oil pans for all types of racing, Hamburger is searching for ways to sell street-legal performance through his enterprise, SLP Engineering, located in Toms…
