ALTERNATIVE PICKUP LINES Pickup truck enthusiasts interested in alternative fuels presently have a number of “green” options available from General Motors. Dedicated compressed natural-gas pickups can be purchased at Chevy and GMC dealers nationwide. While the pur-chase price of these pickups is $4875 higher than identical gasoline variants, financial incentives are in place to bring down the cost. A federal tax credit of up to $2000 is available, and other financial incentives are offered by some states, natural-gas utilities, and regional air-quality districts. What are the advantages of natural-gas vehicles? They run up to 70 percent cleaner than their gasoline-powered cousins, and fuel costs at natural-gas pumps at service stations are currently about two thirds those of gasoline, calculated at a gallon-of-gasoline-equivalency basis.
