MERCEDES-BENZ. CONFIRMS U.S. PLANT PLANS

Later thiS year’ Mercedes-Benz will join the growing throng of foreign makers with U.S manufacturing Operations when ground is broken for its first American assembly plant. While final site selection isn’t expected until early fall, head of M-B’s Passenger-car division, Jiirgen Hubbert confirmed the facility will turn out “a new type of four-wheel drive passenger vehicle” which will sell passenger $30,000 when it begins rolling off the assembly line in 1997 Other M-B spokesmen characterized the products as a “third-generation sport/utility.” The $300 million venture is expected to employ 1500 workers to build 60,000 vehicles per year - two thirds of which will be exported. Although there’s widespread speculation that North Carloina may have an inside edge in site location (Freightliner Corporation, owned by Mercedes since 1981, already operates two facilities…
