Medieval manuscript sells for €4.5 million

The National Library of Luxembourg has acquired the Giant Bible of Saint Maximin for €4.5 million. This is a medieval manuscript created around 1080 at the imperial abbey of Sankt Maximin in Trier, near Luxembourg’s modern borders. This illuminated manuscript, weighing 25 kilograms and made from the hides of about 200 cows, is a rare and significant cultural artifact. Claude D. Conter, Director of the National Library, remarked, “It is extremely rare for a manuscript to return to its ‘place of origin’ nearly a millennium after its creation, and rarer still for its journey over such a long period to be traceable year by year.” For centuries, the bible served as a lectionary for special occasions at the abbey’s church and remained in the monastery’s library until Sankt Maximin was…
