During the Middle Ages, study and learning took place in different contexts, ranging from the monastery to the schoolroom, and from training grounds to the job itself. This issue explores intellectual, practical, and martial education in its various settings, looking at learning in the monastery and the university in Western Europe, the development of colleges of law in the Islamic world, the training of apprentices, as well as learning mathematics and swordsmanship. A complete education in the Middle Ages entailed mastery of many subjects and skills, but these, of course, were not available to everyone.
