The recent drought has taken its toll, significantly reducing the national grain crop, which in turn has lowered the breeding and survival rates of gamebirds. This was particularly noticeable early in the season. The usual miles and miles of sunflower lands had been dramatically reduced, and the individual plants were much smaller than usual, standing knee-high with heads the size of saucers.
