Set a firmware password Make your Mac even harder for thieves to use Setting up your Mac’s firmware password means any potential thief couldn’t continue to use it by simply swapping out the hard drive. Doing so would prompt them to enter a password that only you’d know. The most important part is that you remember this password, otherwise you’ll have to take a trip to your nearest Apple Store to reset it. 1 Restart and recover Restart your Mac and hold down Cmd+R to boot it into Recovery Mode. When the Recovery window appears, head to Utilities>Firmware Password Utility.
