Configure macOS to free up disk space when needed

The transition from mechanical disk drive to solid state disk (SSD) has boosted the performance of Macs and they are amazingly fast, but space is often limited. If you are struggling for disk space, a new feature in macOS Sierra called Optimised Storage solves the problem. It makes use of iCloud and files can be stored online instead of on the Mac’s disk. If the disk is short of space then files are moved online, but if there is lots of space they will stay on the Mac. You no longer need to worry about disk space and macOS handles everything.
