In die jaar 2000 gaan stap ’n boer en sy vrou een laatmiddag in die Paastyd langs die see. Waar hulle normaalweg graag gesels, is hulle dié dag stil. Elkeen verdiep in sy eie gedagtes, daardie soort wat ’n gewigtigheid het waarmee jy nie jou maat wil belas nie omdat elkeen se graaf reeds te swaar is. Vroeër die dag het sy aan die werkers ’n boodskap gebring oor die betekenis van die Kruis, self probeer om opnuut die Verlossingsboodskap aan te gryp as ’n pad deur die wildernis waarin hulle hulle tans bevind. Dinge lyk lelik op die plaas. Hulle beleef die ergste droogte in veertig jaar. Die man het die vorige dag staan en kyk hoe ’n paling worstel om te oorleef in die laaste paar millimeter water…
