In die koninkryk van Jordanië verrys die klipstad Petra soos ’n kosbare skat in die middel van ’n verlate landskap.

Koeëlmerke teen die kruik dui op talle mislukte pogings van ywerige skuts in die verlede om die skatte by te kom V ir baie jare het slegs die inwoners van Wadi Musa (wat Moses se fontein beteken) geweet van die fabelagtige stad Petra, weggesteek tussen die barre rooi rotsbanke van die vuurwarm Jordaniese woestyn. Petra, wat “rots” beteken, is juis afgelei van die rooi of roesbruin rotsformasies waaruit die stad ontstaan het. Dit beteken letterlik “roosrooi-stad halfpad so oud soos tyd”, en op ’n helder dag lyk dit inderdaad of die stad in die son “gloei”. Soos dit ’n goeie toeris betaam, doen ek moeite met my vooraf leeswerk en google “Petra”. Ek klik op die talle foto’s van die stad wat op my skerm verskyn. Ek kyk na die…
