Certain jobs are met with a sharp intake of breath when first diagnosed or flagged up on an MoT test – and replacing the front axle balljoints is one such job. If you’re met with a knock or clonk over rough ground or when turning – and everything else seems okay – your Discovery 2 or Range Rover P38 may be due a set of new joints. Happily, with the tools needed to press the interference-fit balljoints in and out of the axle casing now available relatively inexpensively, it’s a viable DIY job. Of course, the tool is a massive help but because the joints will have been happily nestled in their sockets for the majority of the vehicle’s life in all weathers, they can take some patience to shift.
