Three days after Luc Geraerts became the new owner of a rare, Belgian-built 86-inch Series I that had just been given a world-class restoration, he declared: ‘I’m going to take it apart’

The back story of how this superb 1954 86-inch Series I came to be in the possession of one of the most dedicated and meticulous Land Rover collectors I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet is tremendous; it’s what brought me on an expedition across the Channel to Bilzen, in the far east of Belgium, to meet 53-year-old industrial designer, Luc Geraerts. As a young boy, Luc knew of three farmers in his home village of Hoeselt – barely a couple of miles away from Bilzen – all three of whom used 80-inch Series Is. One of the farms actually adjoined the garden of Luc’s family home, and he recalls how he spent many long hours, happily watching the farmer trundling around his meadow, at the wheel of his faithful 80in.…
