Although it took Carole Simpson-Hadley and her partner, Peter, a while to appreciate the appeal of an XJS, they’re now rather smitten with this ’92 coupé – despite a list of initial challenges

My partner Peter’s first foray into Jaguar ownership began in 1983 with a Moroccan Bronze XJ6 Series II 4.2, a car that stayed with him for twenty years until it finally succumbed to floorpan rot (largely due to a leaking rear screen seal) and became part of the ‘might get done one day, part of the pension pot’ collection of a local farmer. I had yet to join the Jaguar-owning world at that point, having spent from 1975 to ’97 with a collection of five Gilberns – the only car brand to emanate from Wales. Fast-forward to meeting Peter, with cars being a common interest (and he being Welsh, so well-versed in the matter of Gilbern) and the decision was made to obtain our first Jaguar together.
