SIMON ALDRIDGE 1953-2024 We are saddened to announce the death of Simon Aldridge on Nov 14th 2024. Simon was well known and well respected in the classic car world, and was the founder of Aldridge Trimming Ltd. Born in 1953, Simon was the eldest of 6. At the young age of 8, he first started helping his Grandfather who ran a coachbuilding business from his premises in Dudley Road, Wolverhampton, and this fuelled his lifelong passion for classic cars. In the early 1980s Simon decided to follow in his Grandfather’s footsteps and formed Aldridge Trimming. Initially Simon focused his energies on the retrimming of cars, whilst also working on restoring his own E-type. DS420 MEET ANNOUNCED

A group of Daimler DS420 enthusiasts has announced plans for a gathering at the British Motor Museum on 11 May 2025. It’s hoped to get as many DS420s in attendance as possible with other Jaguar and Daimler models welcome to exhibit. “This isn’t a meeting arranged through any particular Daimler or Jaguar club,” says organiser Giles Usher, “and members of all clubs are welcome to attend. There will be a reserved dedicated display area for DS420s at Gaydon - on the Southern Lawn but this may be moved to hardstanding if the weather has been poor. WHEN I was photographing the V8 250 and Sovereign featured in this issue, a couple who were out for a walk started asking questions about the cars. Not only did they recognise both models as Jaguars (we’ll gloss over the fact they’re technically Daimlers) but it then sparked a conversion about the brand as a whole including the recently revealed Type 00 concept plus its controversial all-electric future. IT’S AMAZING how some once-popular options on new cars very quickly become defunct. Back in the early 2000s, I worked on the motoring desk at Auto Express, which was then the UK’s best-selling weekly car magazine. At the time, satellite navigation was all the rage – an expensive option, but also one that came with distinct bragging rights in the office or golf club car parks. To fit a sat nav system to something as ordinary as a Ford or a Vauxhall would set you back over £1,000, whilst Jaguar’s all-singing, all-dancing touchscreen system with ‘haptic’ feedback, which pulsed slightly when you pressed the digital button, was the absolute bees’ knees. ALTHOUGH THE Daimler brand remained part of the business when I joined Jaguar in the late Seventies, it was reduced to simply being the highest specification of the XJ models. The only distinguishing exterior features were the fluted grille and rear boot finisher. Yet we were still aware of Daimler’s illustrious history, that it goes back to the origins of the British motor industry and traditionally had been the luxury vehicle of choice for both royalty and the wealthy. The only unique Daimler still in production during my time there was the DS420 assembled at Browns Lane in the so-called limo shop. It says a lot about the level of strategic thinking that went into Jaguar’s purchase of the Daimler Motor Company from Birmingham Small Arms Company, that most of Jaguar’s board members heard the news on the radio. The 1960 purchase had been driven by Sir William Lyons’s plans for expansion – with Daimler’s Radford works offering much more space for the production of Jaguar cars and components. And Daimler wasn’t utilising the space fully. At the time of the takeover it had just two model ranges – the slow selling, somewhat gawky SP250 sports car, launched the previous year, and the Majestic Major saloon, which sat above even the MkIX Jaguar at the very top of the luxury tree. THANKS TO its conversative image, styling and performance, the XJ40 wouldn’t be many people’s first choice to transform into a high performance sports saloon. However, this didn’t stop famed Jaguar expert, Chas Whitaker from Chasseur Developments, to do just that. Thanks to a pair of turbocharged strapped the car’s straight six, between the late Eighties and early Nineties he managed to transform a small handful of examples into a genuinely fast and exciting car. A former RAF pilot, Whitaker had been messing around with Jaguars since the early Eighties originally as a hobby before setting up the Buckinghamshire-based Chasseur Developments in 1989. His plan was to transform the XJ40 into a fast yet discreet sports car with none of the compromises in refinement and comfort performance machines usually suffer from.…

Mission impossible

ON FIRST glance, this 1976 Daimler Double Six coupe looks little different from a standard model. Yes it sits on more modern alloys and yes the suspension is lower but for the uninitiated it looks largely like a standard example of this famously refined and luxurious model. Yet the truth is, due to some serious engine, transmission and suspension upgrades, beneath the standard coupe body is one of the fastest, extreme and well-engineered examples of Jaguar’s big two door I’ve driven. The modifications are the work of St Leonards-on-Sea based specialist, Motor Legends, on behalf of its customer who delivered the car to them in the spring of 2024. Perfect goodbye

THERE ARE very few things that are perfect in life. A Sunday morning coffee in bed maybe or perhaps that wonderful moment when you discover a fiver in a suit you haven’t worn for a while. In my view, another is the F-PACE SVR. Handsome, fast and spacious, it doesn’t just tick every box but notarises them afterwards. Sadly the car has come to end and since Jaguar will be concentrating on electric saloons in the future, neither will it be replaced. And so to mark the end of a fantastic era, we’re saying goodbye to this perfect car. Continuation cars are big business right now, with some of the world’s most revered marques successfully reintroducing an array of famous models, albeit in strictly limited numbers. It’s why Bentley is currently building twelve examples of the iconic ‘Blower’ of the 1920s, and why Aston Martin decided to offer a handful of brand new DB4 Zagatos. It’s also why Jaguar Classic has treated us to continuation examples of the Lightweight E-type, the XKSS and – most recently – the D-type. And it’s easy to see the appeal, with continuation cars usually costing significantly less than the real deal, despite each one having a six- or even seven-figure price tag. While the X-TYPE diesel is undoubtedly the best value entry point to the Jaguar marque, there are still plenty of enthusiasts who feel that a sports saloon needs a petrol engine. And senior contributor Craig Cheetham has found that good, low mileage 2.5 and 3.0s are becoming collectible; with prices rising sharply for the right cars with low mileages and good histories. I live approximately 32 miles away from the middle of nowhere. This means that much of my driving is on national speed limit A-roads, unlit, especially at this time of year. And this means I need decent headlamps. Sadly, those on the X350 were about as bright as my pet rabbit. On the basis that he regards house bricks as an edible substance, this is not a high bar. Even my fiancée’s Xantia – an excellent car, but one of a previous generation – had better headlamps than my daily. Either they were out of alignment or the bulbs were poor – or a combination of the two. MY LACK of mechanical knowledge might be well-documented but even I could diagnose the XF’s horn becoming stuck on was not a good thing. I’m sure everyone in a two-mile radius came to the same conclusion. You may remember from the previous two issues that starting in early December the car had been suffering from several electrical gremlins. Not only was the fluid for the wash wipe now squirting into the driver’s side footwell and the DSC warning light had flashed up on but the nearside rear indicator light was constantly illuminated. Tantalized by the 1996 Daimler Century but unable to find a good one at the time, I realised that by moving on a year I could claim almost the equivalent level of luxury in a highly specified Sovereign, without the expensive limited edition price tag! I adore the XJ40, and the X300 is effectively a grown-up XJ40; the underlying structure is still there, but with all the niggles ironed out, and the curves put back in. I consider the X300 LWB (code named X330) far more practical, and stately, with its higher roofline. However, some would argue that with its longer rear doors it is unbalanced. Of the engine options available for X330 I prefer the 4 litre for optimum refinement, economy and reliability. Unique to the 1997 model year…

Now that the car has its roll cage, seat and main driver controls fitted, the last few weeks have been spent working on the engine bay mainly, but also suspension and brakes. For the engine, the air inlet system, cooling pipework and especially the exhaust will be different to the factory original systems and so working out how to cram everything into the engine bay was clearly going to take some thought and experimenting. I started by quickly building up a “dummy” engine from spare parts with no crank or pistons so that it was lighter and easier to manoeuvre into the engine bay. As mentioned previously, I have opted to use the AJ-V6 3.0 litre (AJ30) as found in the X-TYPE, S-TYPE, X350 and early XF models. I will…

Undertray trouble

The plastic or metal shields secured underneath the bodywork of a Jaguar are often regarded as more of a nuisance than a necessity. Yet they help with soundproofing, protect components from corroding and, in some cases, aid airflow to parts that may benefit from additional cooling. When their fastenings become corroded and either seize or break off, then those undertrays can rattle or even fall off, but it’s important to keep them fitted and ensure they are secure. So, this workshop addresses some of the common issues that can arise and how to fix them, along with replacing broken undertrays. 1 Most undertrays are secured to the underside of the Jaguar with several steel bolts or screws that can easily corrode, so spray over them with penetrating fluid first, then work…

WITH JAGUAR’S chairman, (Sir) William Lyons, only really interested in winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it meant Jaguar’s participation in other major races around the globe were usually down to independent teams. This includes the D-type’s American debut in early 1955 at the 12 Hours of Sebring at the hands of Briggs Cunningham’s eponymous outfit.
