When our national teams enter the arena, we assume that common purpose is king, with talent just as important as unity and mateship. But occasionally, when personality issues have outweighed performance, some of our best players have been forced out of the Test side long before stumps were called. Here are a few egregious examples.

When Michael Clarke went public with his version of the SCG dressing room bust-up with Simon Katich in his autobiography, the assumption of esprit de corps in the Australian team took another pasting. Lock up your sense of decorum, because Clarke admitted to calling Katich and Michael Hussey “dogs” and “weak c---s” during the fracas – and then seemed surprised by the renewed fuss during a publicity tour for the book: “I can’t believe eight years on from that event we’re still talking about it. My message to everybody – including Simon – is move on.” Well, skipper, Katich made it plain that he remained in no mood to forgive for what happened next.
