FAMÍLIA SIGHT 1939 Few buildings in the world are as distinctive – or have a history as troubled – as Barcelona’s Sagrada Família. Nearly a century after its primary architect, Antoni Gaudí, died in 1926, the Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família is only now nearing completion. The foundation stone was laid in 1882, with Gaudí taking over responsibility the following year. But work on his uniquely organic Art Nouveau-plus design was slow and halting; less than a quarter completed at his death, building was stopped by the Spanish Civil War in 1936, when vandals destroyed architectural plans and models.
