Battle of Old Byland 14 October 1322 Robert I, remembered as Robert the Bruce, defeats Edward II at Byland as part of the Wars of Scottish Independence. Two years later, the pope recognises Robert as the king of an independent Scotland. As for Edward, his wife, Isabella of France, and her lover depose him. His son and successor, Edward III, reconciles with Robert and renounces his claims to the Scottish throne. Wallis Simpson receives her decree nisi 27 October 1936 Wallis Simpson is granted a decree nisi after filing for divorce from her second husband, Ernest Aldrich Simpson.
