The Independence of India

ROYAL GALLERY Appointed as Viceroy of India on 20 February 1947, Lord Louis Mountbatten was delegated the challenge of overseeing British India’s independence. Favouring a clean break rather than a transitional period as a result of the threat of civil war, Lord Mountbatten set the date of independence for 15 August 1947. British India was to be divided – India would be governed by Jawaharlal Nehru, while a separate Muslim state called Pakistan would be led by Muhammad Alu Jinnah. At 8.30am that morning, Nehru was sworn in as India’s first prime minister in Delhi. Behind Lord Mountbatten and Nehru stands Lady Mountbatten, who had allegedly become the lover of the new prime minister.…
