Luis Buñuel hizo suyo el grito de guerra de los simbolistas franceses –Épater le bourgeois–, aunque hay que reconocer que los burgueses se lo pusieron fácil. En la época de Un perro andaluz y La edad de oro, las sales contra los desmayos seguían a la orden del día y el público era tan inocente, que caía en las redes del escándalo por un simple ojo cortado. Su siguiente película, Las Hurdes. Tierra sin pan, rodada en la primavera de 1933 –entre el 20 de abril y el 24 de mayo–, volvió a cabrear a los espectadores y fastidió todavía más a un Gobierno que hubiera preferido apartar la vista ante la miseria del mundo rural. Es cierto que Buñuel exageraba, que su sentido del espectáculo imponía que la verdad…
