The Seventies began large, and ended up small – in hi-fi terms, that is. During the early-to-mid part of that decade, the coolest thing that an audiophile could own seemed to be a huge Japanese amplifier, festooned with a variety of different knobs, buttons and, latterly, power meters. This could drive up to four speakers, either with them in two separate rooms or as a single 4.0 quadraphonic setup. Massive receivers, reel-to-reel tape decks and turntables ruled the roost, and the bigger the loudspeaker cabinet was the better… Then, around 1978, things started to change. The major Japanese electronics giants began to produce slimline amps and pertly sized matching tuners and cassette decks. More small speakers began to surface to match these new microsystems.
