THAT WAS THEN… In 2012, C-suite leaders ranked three traits as most important to executive presence: gravitas, communication skills, and the “right” appearance. A reexamination of the concept in 2022 (under the backdrop of a global pandemic, war in Europe and the Middle East, social movements, and the continued rise of online platforms) unsurprisingly revealed a new ranking. THIS IS NOW… Current leaders instead value inclusiveness, authenticity, respect for others, and diversity most highly. Aspiring leaders should focus on developing in these areas, and executives whose leadership style neatly matches the old profile cannot rest on their laurels; they must stretch themselves in new ways to meet evolving expectations.
