GOING FOR GOLD
THE 2024 OLYMPICS have come and gone, and with it came a surge of interest in the overlooked fields of sport. In particular, Olympic shooting drew attention with some credit to televised coverage of five events: Air Pistol and Air Rifle, Smallbore, Trap and Skeet. However, Turkish national Yusuf Dikeç went viral online and found himself the topic of mainstream news and social media for his unorthodox appearance during the 10-meter Mixed Air Pistol event. While other shooters wore specialized eyewear, ear protection, and clothing, Dikeç won a silver medal in a t-shirt, glasses, and with some earplugs, all while striking a relaxed pose with one hand in his pocket. The juxtaposition of these competitors lent to jokes and memes, but it also brought shooting sports into national conversation.
