SPICED STAR BISCUITS

A staple Christmas biscuit recipe – perfect if you have young children to entertain. Add decorations of your choice and hang the biscuits on the tree or bag them up for a delightful edible gift.

HANDS-ON TIME 40MIN, PLUS COOLING AND (OVERNIGHT) CHILLING. COOKING TIME ABOUT 20MIN. MAKES ABOUT 35 BISCUITS FOR THE BISCUITS ✶✶2tbsp runny honey ✶✶25g (1oz) unsalted butter ✶✶50g (2oz) light muscovado sugar ✶✶Finely grated zest of 1/2 orange and 1/2 lemon ✶✶225g (8oz) self-raising flour, plus extra to dust ✶✶ 1tsp each ground cinnamon and ground ginger ✶✶1/2tsp grated nutmeg ✶✶A pinch of ground cloves ✶✶ 1tbsp finely chopped candied peel ✶✶50g (2oz) ground almonds ✶✶ 1 large egg, lightly beaten ✶✶ 11/2tbsp milk TO DECORATE ✶✶ 150g (5oz) icing sugar ✶✶Silver dragées 1 In a small pan, heat the honey, butter, muscovado sugar and orange and lemon zests until the butter melts and the ingredients are thoroughly combined.
