In 1856, 23-year-old Kate Warne walked into the Pinkerton Detective Agency to apply for a job. Unfortunately, Allan Pinkerton had to inform her that the secretarial job had been filled. “But I’m not here to apply for secretary work,” may have been Kate’s reply. Allan Pinkerton took a chance that day in hiring Kate as his first female detective. It was a smart move on his part. No one ever suspected a woman working as a detective, and Kate learned to use this to her advantage. She became adept at wearing disguises, using different accents, and changing her name as needed to blend in with the enemy. Some names she used were M.B. and Mrs. Cherry. Pinkerton called her Kitty.
