After spending time in hospital being treated for terminal liver cancer, the seriously ill Chataporn Sriphonia, 49, was taken back to her home in Udon Thani province, Thailand, in a van accompanied by paramedics. Before they got there, though, the paramedics saw that Sriphonia had stopped breathing and concluded that she had died. On arrival, without checking with doctors, they told Sriphonia’s mother, Mali, of her death. Distraught, she informed their relatives and, following the Buddhist tradition of swift cremation, immediately began organising the funeral for the next day.
