Come comunicano gli elefanti?

Il barrito è il verso che percepiamo anche noi uomini, ma in realtà questi pachidermi hanno pure un’altra modalità per scambiarsi informazioni: un dialogo a ultrasuoni che solo le tecnologie più recenti ci hanno permesso di captare.

Gli elefanti comunicano tra loro anche usando suoni a bassa frequenza, che noi uomini non riusciamo a sentire e che arrivano a più di dieci chilometri di distanza. Questi suoni sono generati, come nell’uomo, dall’aria che fa vibrare le corde vocali: la lunghezza di quelle del pachiderma, unita alla vasta cassa di risonanza, formata dalla bocca e dalla proboscide, fanno sì che riesca a produrre frequenze molto basse (sotto i 20 Hertz, la minima percepita dall’uomo). Queste onde lunghe sono in grado di superare ostacoli come gli alberi; gli elefanti possono perciò restare in contatto tra loro anche in mezzo a fitte foreste. 100 mila: i muscoli che formano la proboscide; questa è così forte da sollevare pesi di 250 kg.…
