‘Why I choose SOUTH AFRICA’

Judging by doom-laden posts on Facebook, you’d think South Africans were emigrating en masse. But there are also many people out there who visit and fall in love with our messy, beautiful, diverse country.

Statistics South Africa’s latest figures for the number of people who immigrated to South Africa between 2016 and 2021 reveal a net total gain of 853 000 people. We chatted to five immigrants about why they choose to call South Africa home. Freya Bell, England IT may be a bit of a cliché, but Freya Bell admits that it all began with a man. ‘A South African gentleman stole my heart,’ she says, laughing.
