WATCHMAKING TENDS TO be an inherently conservative art. You’re meant to purchase a mechanical watch and keep it forever, passing it down to kin, and the vagaries of trends and of-the-moment design usually do not mesh well with these ambitions of eternity. However, in recent years watchmakers have started venturing outside the safe and comfortable confines of reserved colors and staid patterns, looking instead to shake things up and make a splash. Funnily enough, these bolder timepieces are often great talismans of the moment in which they’re created, acting as a funky design-driven time capsule of sorts.
