JOHN POPE FOUND HIS CALLING EARLY. At the age of six, he bought a deck of playing cards, a souvenir of the 1904 World’s Fair, at a tag sale in his neighborhood in Jefferson City, Missouri. That same year, his father took him to Italy to see the town near the Austrian border from which Pope’s greatgrandfather had emigrated. The boy was quickly seduced by those enduring sirens: antiques, which allow us to touch other moments in time, and travel, which opens up the world.
