Bangkok The Thai capital is experiencing a design renaissance. Furniture designer Robert Sukrachand offers his guide to finding the most exciting pieces. TEXT BY MACKENZIE WAGONER •As Bangkok’s skyline soars with gilded high-rises and luxury mega-malls, a glut of young talent is resisting monoculture by returning to Thailand’s traditional crafts and motifs—think: compelling cane furniture, embroidered textiles, and chromatic glasswork. EL REY COURT Santa Fe, New Mexico Jay Carroll first fell for Santa Fe 20 years ago when he was working as a roadie for a touring country band. As a creative director at Levi’s, he would return often to source traditional Chimayan textiles. Finally, last year, he and his wife, Allison (they’re the couple behind the groovy Joshua Tree–based olive oil and lifestyle brand Wonder Valley), put down roots in the pinon-studded high desert town, partnering with a few friends to reimagine the 1930s-era El Rey Court motor lodge as an 86-room boutique hotel. “Once we peeled back decades of furniture, the bones really sang,” says Carroll. IN MANY WAYS, the Cleveland Park project that interior designer Cameron Ruppert started in the fall of 2017 was serendipitous. The homeowner, a 35-year-old tutor and Harvard graduate, originally intended to decorate the entire space in the historic Washington, D.C., neighborhood herself. But as the two women, who met through a mutual friend, started talking, they realized they ought to work together. “She had so many ideas,” says Ruppert. “She just didn’t know how to pull it all together.” Fortunately, the client was eager to work with the team she had assembled to completely gut-renovate the Arts and Crafts home: Ruppert; Suzie O’Brien and Dale Overmyer of Overmyer Architects; and art consultant Lauren Hilyard. “The house had potential,” says Overmyer.
