Years ago, when Graham Kostic and Fran Taglia were engaged, they moved from a tiny apartment in Boston’s South End to a 3,000-square-foot condo in a soda factory-turned-auto garage in Chicago. “The layout offered both an open loft feel in the front and a sense of privacy because of the small jewel-box rooms in the back,” says Kostic. “And we loved that juxtaposition.” As soon as the couple moved into the two-bedroom—which includes a massive multipurpose living area and kitchen, as well as a private courtyard and garden in front—they began an extensive eight-month renovation project.
