It didn’t happen in music, but it did in the other Arts, so Rouault is an outlier, an anomaly: a notable modern artist who was clearly religious. There was a lot of secular sneering, but it didn’t seem to matter to him. His paintings seem to resonate with this search for the sacred, but it’s a search that comes through his taking the side of the marginalised. When Christ appears here, it’s with people in the suburbs.
