Portrait of a Carthusian by Petrus Christus ‘This painting is, for me, one of the greatest expressions of any art form we have. Firstly, its exquisitely virtuosic brushstrokes–that beard, once seen, is never forgotten. Beyond that, however, in a portrait we delight in discovering the person behind the image. This monk is initially mysterious; members of the Carthusian order were hermits living in individual cells. But as we look deeply into his face, we see two gentle, human qualities: humour and compassion. This man’s response to life is both light and deep.
