THE US Vice-President J. D. Vance lecturing us in Europe on political morality was both incongruous and offensive. At home, he has been party to the destruction of the rule of law and has encouraged the persecution of decent individuals whose only fault was that they did their job and insisted that Donald Trump was subject to the same laws as everyone else. Yet, however inappropriate Mr Vance’s intervention was, he touched on an issue that ought to be the constant concern of every democracy. The balance between freedom and order is never easy and, in every generation, we are challenged to set it afresh. The problem is at its sharpest for many of the advocates of change.
