WORDS: STEVE COOPER PICS: DARREN HENDLEY Suzuki’s earliest trail bikes were little more than repurposed road bikes with off-road tyres, braced bars and possibly a dual ratio transmission. Like many other manufacturers, the Hamamatsu firm believed such offerings were enough – well, until those upstarts at Yamaha unveiled the DT-1 in 1968. Almost before the covers came off the seminal 250 from Iwata, Suzuki’s engineers in Hamamatsu were on the case drawing up their considered response. The resultant TS250 would go on to be a very significant revenue generator for Suzuki and its basic design changed little over more than a decade, other than subtle tweaks and cosmetic revisions.
