Type-9 into Cortina

Q I have a Mk1 Cortina 1500 Pre-Crossflow, upgraded with mostly GT parts. It runs wonderfully but only has four-speeds, so runs out of puff quite quickly at the top end, but is pretty nippy off the line thanks to an Escort axle with unknown diff. What do you recommend as the best replacement five-speed box? The cheaper and less faffing the better. J GittingsUK A It’s not really a straightforward swap in the Mk1 but there are two realistic options: With Ford’s Type-9 the transmission tunnel will need cutting out and replacing with a larger one (you can buy generic ones), plus conversion to cable clutch (or stick with hydraulic using hydraulic release bearing kit),plus new gearbox mounting points will need fabricating, and you’ll need a new prop.
