1600 Crossflow

The staple engine of virtually any classic Ford, the Crossflow is a great place to start. But, not all Crossflows are the same. Introduced in the Mk2 Cortina, it means you could well be looking at the earlier, slightly chambered head and non-711M block and, worst of all, a wheezy single-choke carb. In truth, there’s nothing that wrong with a non-711, they’re just not as suitable as an out and out screamer — the cylinder block of the later engine has a thicker core, while the head’s flat and the pistons chambered to suit.
