The Twin Cam is Year Zero in terms of the Escort’s motorsport history — when Boreham first targeted the world of rallying with the legendary car.

Early in 1968, there was a great rush to get the new Escort Twin Cams ready to go rallying, and there would be intensive development in the next two years. Five new rally cars — XOO 243F, XOO 254F, XOO 262F, XOO 354F, and XOO 355F — eventually got the season under way. The new car’s debut came on the San Remo rally, where Ove Andersson took 3rd place overall. But as far as the crew was concerned much improvement still had to come, particularly in traction and rear suspension control. After some hair-raising post-rally testing, Bill Meade’s team had developed the turret kit, where the dampers were positioned almost vertically, and where longer and larger gas-filled Bilstein dampers were fitted.
