It is with a heavy heart that I write this final editorial. Our company has made the difficult decision to close the magazine, a decision that none of us wanted, but sadly it is a reflection of the times we are living in. Looking back through past issues of this magazine, the last few pages would be filled with classified adverts selling all sorts – harness, carriages, and clothing, alongside adverts for situations vacant, accommodation for carriage drivers and their horses, even details of stolen carriages. Today, all of these can be bought and sold via online sites for free or at very little cost. Our ever changing world

It seems all good things do come to an end as I write this final piece for Carriage Driving magazine. Nothing is as certain as change and the driving world has seen plenty. Our beloved equines are now mostly used for pleasure rather than work, new disciplines and equipment have evolved and the way we interact and share information has reshaped into the digital age. If you are a certain vintage, you cannot beat the joy of finding the book you had been searching for, opening the pages to drink in the information and illustrations explaining all, knowing you would return again and again to this bound abundance of knowledge. The demise of “Carriage Driving” magazine allows some licence to look back and forwards in this final edition. Since 1972 when “Horse Driving Trials” started formally with the creation of international rules by the late Duke of Edinburgh we have seen many changes. In those early days the sport was dominated by the horse teams classes. It was not uncommon to see 15 horse teams at National events across the the UK. From that time however the sport has continued to develop and become more inclusive. We were blessed in the UK with many amazing estates that could offer the space for the driver’s village and the marathon. Of course, the marathon then included five sections and could be up 27 km. One to watch this year

The Hackney is stunning to watch and is a very versatile breed which can turn its hoof to most disciplines. With its athleticism, stamina, and natural balance the breed is now used for eventing, scurry driving, dressage, private driving, coaching, hunting, and jumping and of course enjoying pleasure rides or hacking. In the showing circles, it is shown in-hand and in harness showing off its spectacular high stepping movement, speed and grace. The Hackney has an elegance in the show ring which catches your breath, beautifully balanced, moving effortlessly with its high stepping action which has many speeds, from an almost dancing slow pace to a ground covering speed, all with its natural high stepping action. The RDA East Region held a driving demo day at Barrow Farm RDA, kindly supported by the Worshipful Company of Wheelwrights. Anne Mitchell, regional driving representative, explains why: “Carriage driving offers a host of benefits to RDA participants, from independence and the opportunity to get out in the fresh air; to working with an empathetic animal like a horse, whilst developing as a team with their coach. Iremember watching scurry driving on the television at Horse of the Year Show when I was young, back when Anne Muir and Christine Dick were driving and being absolutely in awe of the speed, accuracy, and fun. I never thought it was a sport I would end up doing for 20 years. As I went through my show jumping years, you always knew how you could get into show jumping, showing or mounted games but I never heard much about getting into scurry driving. That was, until I helped a friend who had a pair of ponies and started to talk to other scurry drivers. A new king is crowned

The Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) marks the culmination of the Osborne Scurry Driving competition, with competitors having qualified at events up and down the country. Over a couple of days, drivers compete in two rounds for the Small and Large classes, with the top six driver/pony combinations going through to the Championship on Saturday evening. The first Small class got off to a flying start, with James Starr taking first place with Pick & Mix as the fastest of six clear rounds. Second went to Troya King with Vodka & Tonic. The first round for the Large class gave Alison Osborne the win with Chip & Dale, closely followed by Nigel Olliffe with Fruit & Fibre. Alison notched up her second win with Woody & Buzz in the…

Celebrating a successful season of scurry driving

Over every outdoor season the BSTD collates the results and turns them into points for the grand league. There are the usual classes for the ponies, Very Small Pony (VSP), Small Pony Pair (SPP), Large Pony Pair (LPP) and Single Pony (SP). In each of these classes grooms awarded, plus the three overall champions receive some beautiful compilation photos of their season which have been taken by Oddball photography. A central hotel is chosen which this year was organised by Chloe Williams with back up help from mother and father Wendy and Ivor Williams. The Championships – who will take the national titles?

It’s an exciting time of year for indoor driving fans. In April there will be 19 proud new holders of 2024 British Indoor Carriage Driving Champion titles, including two Supreme Champions. ICD-UK has made more than 300 National Champion drivers since its inception in 1998 – from aged eight to over 80. Many have gone on to win British Carriagedriving titles and to represent Great Britain as young drivers and adults. In each of the 21 regions around the UK, every driver’s best five results turned into points and, based on their class, the driver with the most points and who has a 75% or higher performance rating, gets an invitation to enter the Championships. Years ago, when talking to my mother about why she was so involved in the Royal Life Saving Society she expressed the view that there are in reality two types of people in this world – Party Givers and Party Go-ers. The Givers are the people, like her, who volunteer to organise events, societies, fundraisers and any kind of activity which requires someone to pick up the mantle and say, ‘Ok I’ll do it’. A healthy balance

Whilst winter is the most obvious time for horses to lose weight, some can “drop off” at any time of year. Following some basic principles should help prevent this and help find a feeding regime which will put the weight back on and keep the horse looking good. STEP 1: Make sure you’re feeding enough FIBRE Ideally, hay or haylage should be fed on an ad lib basis. If this is not possible, horses should receive a minimum of 1.5kg per 100kg of their bodyweight in forage/fibre per day, which can be increased to 2.5kg per 100kg when weight gain is required. For example, as a minimum, a 500kg horse would require 7.5kg per day in forage (on a dry matter basis), increased up to 12.5kg per day to help…

To Insure or not to insure; that is the question’. (with apologies to William Shakespeare) What is insurance? Essentially insurance is the spreading of personal financial risk amongst a high number of individuals. It originated after 1686 in Edward Lloyd’s Coffee House which was frequented by maritime merchants and sailors. Lloyd provided information on shipping news and foreign trade at a time where the rewards for successful voyages were bountiful. However, the losses of ships and their cargoes at sea ruined many investors and these merchants realised that by clubbing together, they could provide a financial assistance scheme to compensate those whose investments were lost. The investors developed a system whereby they all contributed into a pool of money and in the event of a future lost ship and/or cargo,…

The London International Horse Show played host to the sixth leg of the FEI Driving World Cup, turning the ExCel Centre into a battleground where horsepower and skill collided in a spectacular display of carriage driving mastery. The competition featured a stellar line-up, with renowned names Ijsbrand Chardon, Koos de Ronde, Glenn Geerts, Georg Von Stein, Mareike Harm, and wild cards Boyd Exell and Daniel Naprous contesting for the London win. Just enjoy the diversion and the company of kind people who happened to have a driving pony with no driver. World Horse Welfare Yogi has been part of my life now for nearly two decades. He has given us more fun, enjoyment and successes than I could have dreamed or planned for. Shires return to Staffordshire

The world’s largest gathering of Shire horses is returning to Staffordshire Showground this March for the first time in five years with a bigger and brighter programme. The National Shire Horse Show will feature even more opportunities to see the gentle giants being put through their paces in all their finery after 12 new classes were added to the ring timetable. New for 2024 are extra classes for young riders and handlers, to encourage the next generation of Shire horse owners, breeders, and riders, plus more opportunities to see eye-catching turnout classes. After a gap in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid pandemic, the event was subsequently held outdoors at Newark Showground in Nottinghamshire. Exciting times ahead

After a very successful 2023 season, where young drivers did exceptionally well across the board – the stage is set for 2024 to be a very exciting year. These young drivers share their plans and hopes for the year ahead. Ruby Gray, 14, winner of the National Novice Championships from a strong class of 17 entries, has her hopes set on selection for the junior championships in Sweden this summer. “I’m doing lots of work at home in preparation with the support of my trainer Tara Wilkinson. I am also planning on attending the BYD training camps as well as competitions. The events I’m looking forward to this year are the indoor championships, Sandringham and Sweden - if I get selected. There were some significant changes to the set-up of the sale this time, with the number of named ‘sections’ reduced to Sundries (which now includes harness, pictures, models, and books), Vehicle Parts, Saddlery & Tack, and Carriages. This has been achieved by placing a bottom limit on the estimated value of a lot and reducing the number of lots in the Sundries section by applying a limit on numbers. Not only is it simply not viable to sell lots for less than £20-30, but also there has been increasing pressure for the sale to end earlier so that those in attendance can get home at a reasonable time. Ring 1 was therefore Sundries only, with 700 lots on offer, whilst Ring 2 commenced with Carriages (74 lots forward), followed by…

In preparation of writing this, my last ‘Coaching Chatter' column, I have been looking back through a number of the pieces that I have contributed to this magazine over the past 20 years. It was quite a surprise just how much coaching has changed and how we have moved on in that short time. When I was starting off big chestnut Gelderlander teams were the order of the day. The late Peter Munt, the late Steve Jarman, the late Ian Smith and the late Jet Taylor, all were driving big chestnut teams and fighting to get out of the preliminary judging ring first to be at the head of the road drive and set the pace. At around that time Peter and Anne Munt won just about every coaching class…

The Drags Club of Paris

Among the first gentlemen to take up driving for pleasure or as a challenge, as early as 1842, was Henry Somerset, then Marquess of Worcester, and later the 8th Duke of Beaufort, the first President of the Coaching Club and the Road Club. His early example was followed by numerous gentlemen and a few ladies who took up driving both sports carriages, phaetons, spiders and the like, and of course, four-in-hand coaches. This fashion spread around Europe and to the USA. Paris, as ever in competition with London, was soon to pick up this new fad.
