Idiotic question alert. When do you cease to notice a car no longer has an engine? I’ve spent over 20 years driving Minis, where the noise and character from the four-cylinder lump up front was part of the driving experience, supplemented nicely by the whine from the steering rack in early BMW-era cars. Contrast that with my longterm-test Cooper SE, a car that has all the stance and attitude of those cars, only this time without an engine. The BMC and BMW eras all used to gel into one neat package – the nose-on steering attitude that fed into the torque steer and a sense you were constantly operating at the edge of traction even in the lower-powered cars.
