It’s a picture that’s long stuck with me: we were standing in a damp car park outside a grotty hotel in Wales waiting for the latest 3-series variant to turn up for a road test. The weather was foul – drizzle and the sort of light levels that make you want to mainline vitamin D – and the location dreary. But suddenly two headlights pierced the gloom as my then boss arrived. The new BMW 335i was with us. It honestly felt like Iron Man had just turned up to save humanity, such was the way the excitement levels notched up.
