Her rise to global mega-stardom involved countless images of her in an Audi 80 convertible and later the A4 version; images that contributed to a huge boom in sales for open-top cars, and which made it clear to a whole new bunch of people that premium European cars were not just for architects in rimless spectacles and those who like to take their holidays at the Nürburgring. It was a packed field. The Audi cabrios were up against Mercedes, Saabs, the half-size-smaller Golf, and other less impressive alternatives including the Volvo C70.
