The 325iX was my first scoop as a motoring journalist, a career now in its 50th year. Driving home from a ski trip to Austria, we spotted an undisguised pre-production model and pinned ourselves to its heels on the snow-covered Grossglockner pass, eventually catching the ferociously spinning front wheels on camera from the passenger seat of a five-cylinder Audi 80 quattro, which had pioneered permanent four-wheel drive in 1982, ahead of BMW.
