BMW doesn’t want you to know about this just yet, but the next M3 will come in two flavours: 2027’s electric iM3 followed a year later by a petrol version. Here’s everthing we know about the dynamisch duo

For the first time, buyers of the BMW M3 will be able to choose from two fundamentally different models. While G84 denotes the direct replacement for the combustion-engined six-cylinder version, ZA0 is the internal code of the all-electric four-wheel-drive iM3 (which may end up wearing an M3i badge). There will also be an estate version of the electric M3, codenamed ZA1. It’s a massive change, and involves some collateral damage. The combustion M4 will exit the range, as will the M3 estate. Dubbed G85, the second-generation M4 was originally planned to debut in summer 2028 and run through late 2034, but it’s now been deemed insufficiently profitable. The same thinking is behind the decision to not replace the current M3 Touring when production of the current model ends in February…
