The whole build-up to the first Test was worrisome. Covid-19 wrecked havoc with the Springboks’ preparations, but that is something beyond the control of coach Jacques Nienaber and SA director of rugby Rassie Erasmus. But there were a number of situations and decisions that could’ve been avoided. Having followed the Boks’ unforgettable run to the 2019 World Cup title all around Japan, the South Africans were always clear in their planning, ideas in terms of selection and tactics, and the fitness of players. Just one example – Cheslin Kolbe could’ve been risked for the semi-final against Wales, but Erasmus opted for Sbu Nkosi at right wing, and it paid off as the Sharks star was excellent on the day.
