In the same year that Nikon launched the FM2, 1982, Sony introduced the first video camera/recorder; the terminology quickly shortened to camcorder. The Sony Betamovie was the first combined video camera and recorder, and it used Sony’s Beta format cassettes. It was hardly compact, but it was the shape of things to come and a steady evolution to smaller tape formats – from VHS-C through 8mm to MiniDV – through to the use of memory cards resulted in ever smaller and lighter camcorders. So the idea that the FM2styled Z f is a more capable video camera than any consumer-level camcorder ever was takes a bit of getting used to.
