CANON AE-1

These are the cameras that, in one way or another, had a significant influence on photographers and photography. Canon’s AE-1 brought camera automation to the masses and, in the process, built the brand.

During the 1960s considerable advances were made in micro-electronics – notably integrated circuits or ‘microchips’ – which would eventually have far-reaching effects on the design and manufacture of many consumer products. By the start of the 1970s, the race was on to incorporate these new technologies into cameras which, up until then, had been mechanical instruments. The Pentax ES was the first 35mm SLR with automatic exposure control (an aperture-priority mode) and it appeared in 1971. Over the next couple of years, it was followed by many competitors with the gradual adoption of more electronics including LED viewfinder displays (introduced on the Fujica ST901 in 1974). Canon’s first auto camera was the semi-pro EF introduced in 1974 which had a hybrid mechanical/electronic shutter. The most significant advance came in 1976…
