MANCHESTER AIRPORTS GROUP is calling for household waste to be used to make sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) instead of incinerating it to generate electricity. Research from transport sustainability experts ICF revealed that if all the rubbish currently burned by the United Kingdom was used to make SAF, the carbon saving would be equivalent to the emissions of at least 46 million people flying from London Stansted Airport to Madrid every year. Every year, around 8.5 million tonnes of household rubbish are incinerated to generate electricity, but the same waste could be diverted to UK refineries to produce SAF.
