Editor’s Letter

Here we go into another great British summer. Our national football team is making hard work of an international tournament, it’s raining as usual, and thousands of people are travelling to the south coast to continue the ancient ritual of covering beaches in litter. I guess it could be worse. Our American cousins are seeing half their nation engulfed by tornados and flooding, while the other half is on fire. That’s one comparison we’re not enviously dwelling upon. In between getting chased by enraged wasps and sneezing from rampant hay-fever, we can at least now get together outside. There’s always some pleasure to be found in small groups of grown-men gathering in the drizzle around a smouldering disappointment, as each participant suddenly becomes the world’s leading authority on starting fires.…
